Performing simple maintenance and repairs yourself can save you a buck—or a whole lot of bucks—and it can be essential if you need to fix something easy and don’t have the time, money, or ability to go to a dealership or shop. Here are some do-it-yourself car maintenance tips that will help you in a pinch.
The internet is your friend. Really, there are mechanics all over the internet giving really helpful advice and clear instruction on how to perform routine maintenance or even big repairs on your car (though you shouldn’t perform those unless you’re familiar with car repairs already). YouTube is a great resource for visual learners.
Get yourself some tools, even if you think you’ll never need them. Having an adjustable wrench, torque wrench, pliers, socket and ratchet, and especially a jack (if one didn’t come with your car) are basic necessities for performing minor maintenance. Just don’t blow a lot of money on them—make sure the handles have good grip, but remember that if you’re not a professional mechanic, they probably won’t get a lot of heavy use.
Learn the basics. Know some terminology, like what a serpentine belt is or what calipers do and where they go. Again, the internet is your best friend and the ultimate source of information, and there are tons of car help mobile apps as well that can give you the answers to any of your questions in a jiffy. Knowing where some stuff goes and what it does won’t take much, and it will be really helpful.
Once you get comfortable working on your car, you’ll learn more and more and get better and better. Eventually you’ll be doing tune-ups and oil changes with ease, for way less money.
